Nawaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, announced on Friday that he would win the 2024 general election, which is considered by many Pakistanis and human rights groups as unjust.
The 240 million-person country is facing a period of turmoil as the election commences on Thursday morning.
Despite its reputation for volatile politics, including assassinations and jailing in Pakistan, the country is currently facing an economic crisis with its largest party being outlawed.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-T) party won the most votes share in Pakistan, according to Sharif, who was quoted by the Election Commission of Pakistan earlier this week.
Independent candidates, with the support of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, were reportedly leading the count, according to some media sources.
Election Commission officials had ordered the results to be announced early Friday morning, after more than 10 hours of delay caused by long delays in the vote count.
As the voting began, the Dep. stated that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to win.
According to public opinion, such a government would be highly undemocratic.
In response to the security situation, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry declared on Thursday that it would discontinue mobile phone services nationwide and shut down Pakistan’s land borders, the first step taken by analysts to prevent coordination between opposition candidates.
Having been Pakistan’s prime minister three times in 1990, 1997 and 2013, Sharif returned to the UK last year after ending a prolonged conflict with Pakistan’s powerful army.
